Testing a Novel, Community-Driven Response to Heat Islands in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA — Researchers at University of Pennsylvania have launched a pilot program called the “Cooling Shelter” that transforms bus stops into shaded, community-designed spaces to help residents cope with extreme heat in neighborhoods affected by urban heat islands.

The project, developed with local artists, residents and community organizations, aims to provide relief from rising temperatures while also serving as gathering spaces that reflect the needs and identity of the surrounding neighborhoods.

Researchers hope the community-driven model can improve public health, strengthen neighborhood resilience to climate change and serve as a blueprint for expanding heat-mitigation efforts across Philadelphia.
